Connecting, interacting and learning through social media - at Learning Technologies 2012

Social learning has rapidly moved from the fringes to the mainstream. We now all understand, and accept, that we are naturally learning socially. In the past we have focused a great deal on the tools and media around social learning. Now it's time to drill down into a crucial aspect of this topic. If we learn socially, then we learn from each other. But how, online, do we find the people to learn from, and what makes us trust them - and them trust us? What are the filters we use to screen out the irrelevant from the inch-perfect answer to our needs. Join Joanne Jacobs as she explores these crucial questions.

Learning Technologies Conference Chair, Donald Taylor, said: "Social learning can cover a very wide range of activity. In this session we explore one of its most important aspects: how we identify and interact with key experts and influencers. What role do search engine algorithms play in this, and how much do we rely on our own, human filters?"

In this thought-provoking session, Joanne will draw on a wide range of real-life examples to illustrate how we search for, find and learn from those we decide to trust: Why trust is crucial to social networks - and how we decide how to give it; Learning as part of wider social interaction; Nurturing your reliable sources - as individuals and groups; Critical friends - a key social resource in your development; Are we facing the death of traditional search?
