New technologies: the future of learning

Professor Steve Wheeler, Associate Professor of Learning Technology, University of Plymouth

New and emerging technologies are driving many of the changes we are currently witnessing across all sectors of education and training. From smart phones and touch screen devices to social media and the participatory web, there is now a bewildering set of choices, and a new set of risks and opportunities to consider. How will L & D professionals cope with the pace of change? What new digital literacies and skills will they need to be able to harness the power and potential of these new technologies? What will learners be doing differently in a few years time? In this session we will discuss these questions and also speculate on what the future will bring in terms of:

  • Innovative courses and programmes of learning
  • New and emerging learning technologies
  • Location independent learning environments
  • Alternative modes of assessment and feedback
  • New roles and responsibilities
