session overview

Wednesday 27th January 2010
11:30 - 12:30 Track 4 Session 1

Learner engagement

Executive buy-in is crucial, mangers need to be on board, too, but without learner engagement everything else is pointless. In tough economic times, you might think that learning would be an attractive option, but frequently it's the opposite. Often people have more to do, and less time to do it, and any argument persuading them to engage in learning has to be that much more persuasive. In this practically-focused session we explore the persuasive arguments to help learners get - and stay - engaged.

P1: If we build it, they might stay away in droves!

Employees will not flock to learning just because it's there. So how do you create an attractive and relevant environment for learning that encourages participation? The question is more relevant than ever in tough times, when resistance from learners and management is high. Find out how to build engagement at this collaborative session. Come ready to share, and to walk out of this session with three ideas you can begin to implement the following morning.

• Learner resistance: the unmentionable drag on building successful corporate learning
• Why engagement is harder when times are tough
• Getting beyond a brochure and a jazzy launch party
• The necessity of working with management and operations
• Getting beyond form to function: ‘will this help me keep my job?’
