NHS Blood and Transplant x Make Real: Crossmatching
Award Category: Best use of simulations or virtual environments for learning -- NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) worked together to create Crossmatching VR, a simulation of a vital blood transfusion process. Even seemingly small errors can have fatal consequences. And the process is only more difficult to train due to pressures on the NHS.
The VR app has been the subject of an extensive and detailed academic study, which has already shown:
- Comparable (or improved) outcomes vs traditional face-to-face learning
- Minimum 20 hours of training time saved when delivering group training
- Ability to train outside of the lab environment, without samples or 1:1 supervision
Laura Eastwood from NHSBT will share details of her doctorate research into VR’s efficacy for blood transfusion training. While Sophie Costin from Make Real and Ruth Evans from NHSBT will share insights on how to create a realistic VR experience that delivers real return on investment.
