Skills as the currency of work

What matters in performance at work? Skills are important, but they aren’t everything – which is odd, because currently in L&D it seems skills are all we’ll talk about, for example, Reskilling and Upskilling topped the L&D Global Sentiment Survey last year and this year. But is this near exclusive focus on skills healthy, what are the limits of the concept of ‘skills as the currency of work’, and what else should we be taking into account?

This session will begin with a short presentation about the key points around the current way we’re discussing ‘skills’, then Donald and guests will look into this in more detail. Then we’ll have an interactive session with participants at the forefront of debate. Where will we end up? Hopefully we’ll end up better informed around some of the key questions around skills including:

·        How did skills come to dominate the L&D conversation?

·        What factors beyond skills contribute to performance?

·        A look at how platform are now focused on skills

·        Where are re/upskilling programmes showing success?

·        The difference between ‘work as described’ and ‘work as performed’
